Melba Highway

Savour the delights offered to you along the Melba Highway. Branching off at Coldstream at “Coombe Cottage”, through Yering and following the route of the old Healesville to Lilydale rail line with its numerous historical wooden bridges, you are once again surrounded with the magnificent rolling green vineyards and superb wineries.

You could call in to a European inspired dairy to sample some of their wide variety of cheeses, or continue on to one of the most regal of all historic houses in the region Chateau Yering Historic House Hotel. Visit the many wineries for lunch and stop in at the nearby monthly Farmers Market.

Crossing the Yarra River you now enter the delightful village of Yarra Glen. The landmark here is the historic Grand Hotel with its elegant, olde world architecture. Yarra Glen is renowned for its many antique shops, its mouth watering bakery, boutique shops, fine restaurants and interesting art and craft speciality shops. There is a wide range of accommodation available along the Melba Highway, where you can just rest, kick back and enjoy the atmosphere.

Just out of Yarra Glen you find the oldest working farm still operating, the historic “Gulf Station”. With most of its buildings still intact it is a popular tourist attraction, especially for children.

Continuing on to Steels Creek and Dixons Creek you are constantly surrounded by more and more magnificent wineries and their superb restaurants…… just awaiting your indulgence. This is serious wine country…… but it also provides delectable farm produce which is available at the farm gate. This is perfection plus.

Climbing up Mt Slide you reach Toolangi, Kinglake, the Kinglake National Park and the northern extremity of our region.
