Season 6, episode 6 of Channel 10's Taste of Australia with Hayden Quinn was proudly filmed in our very own backyard, showcasing the epic scenery and incredible tastes of the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges.
Taste of Australia enjoyed exploring our region with former Masterchef contestant and TV food personality Hayden Quinn showcasing the unique personalities shaping the food scene in Australia while experiencing the characters, produce and creative forces contributing to our food culture.
Hayden joined Mick at Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm to throw their lines in the water and enjoy the natural surroundings as they waited for what's always a guaranteed catch.
Family-owned and being Australia's oldest commercial trout farm, the wholesale and tourism farm is a great day out. It is a family-friendly way to enjoy the region and catch some rainbow trout from clean, fresh water that runs straight from Steavenson Falls.
Trout have been bred here for over 60 years, and their experience and dedication to quality are obvious. No antibiotic chemicals or growth hormones are used. They hatch the fish there and
sell them ready for you to eat!
If it's your first time casting a line, you'll have a
great day out as you're guaranteed to catch one that's perfect for the
plate. While you're there, you can also try
their famous Mountain Ash smoked trout from their on-site smokehouse or their speciality - ethically hand-milked caviar.
As featured on Masterchef, the traditional hot-smoked Mountain-Ash Smoked Trout is regarded by many as the best in Australia. Try it for yourself!
Fish for your choice of trout or salmon in any one of their multiple areas. Admission includes all your equipment and bait as well as a quick lesson. Fish are cleaned and packed on ice for you to enjoy later.
Hayden also ventured through the Yarra Valley's famous wine region with its rolling hills and picturesque vineyard views as far as the eye can see. They visited De Bortoli Yarra Valley Estate to meet with Steve and Kate, a father-daughter duo looking after the property's winemaking.
The iconic winery set the scene for them to discuss the wines made in our region, particularly those made on-site, and chat with the winemakers about their processes and what makes wines from our region so unique (and spectacular).
Hayden set up on top of the vineyard to cook a spicy pork dish with matched wine straight from the surrounding vineyard.
Fresh and delicious, Hayden cooked up a tasty apple juice turmeric pork cutlets with apple and witlof salad. The recipe for this can be found here.
Visitors can enjoy tasting at De Bortoli's cellar door daily, with tastings available from 10 am to 5 pm daily.
While you're there, the on-site Locale restaurant offers warm Italian hospitality, award-winning De Bortoli wines and an incredible menu.
Hayden's visit to The Orchard at Montague, located in Narre Warren's north, saw him and the Taste of Australia team enjoy farm-fresh produce straight from the orchard.
They talk about the hero apples grown there, including the SweeTango apples, a new release apple that holds the record for the world's loudest crunch. Montague brings these apples exclusively to Australia. Handpicked, they feature a pink blush colour over a yellow breaking background and must be tasted (or crunched) to believe just how delicious they are
Here you can enjoy tastings, pick your own fruits during the appropriate seasons and shop for some of the tastiest Montague produce and products from Bill's Orchard farm gate, as well as a meal at Stella's Kitchen.
The Little Orchard, situated at the front of Stella's Kitchen, is packed with a range of seasonal fruit, including apples, pears, plums, apricots, peaches and nectarines.
With pick-your-own tours available during the summer, it's a great day out.
Hayden discovered more about the varietals grown on-site and grabbed a big box of Envy apples (the sweetest grown at Montague) to cook with.
