Upper Ferntree Gully

Upper Ferntree Gully, in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, was a farming area in the early 1930’s and popular spot for holiday-makers staying overnight in boarding houses and cottages. It is part of the City of Knox and Shire of Yarra Ranges local government areas. It is close to the suburbs of Knoxfield, Lysterfield, Upwey and Belgrave.

The Ferntree Gully Park, part of the Dandenong Ranges National Park, is a 20-minute walk from the Upper Ferntree Gully train station and is a popular place for fitness seekers and tourists alike. The 1000 Steps walk, one of the most popular walks for fitness training, includes 1000 stony steps that lead to One Tree Hill from the Rangers office and café. The steps are also a commemoration of the Kokoda Trail from World War II, the Kokoda Track was a field of action for Australian soldiers in Papua New Guinea.

The Upper Ferntree Gully Railway Station on the Burwood Highway is part of the Belgrave to Melbourne line offering easy access to the region. The Dandenong Ranges Visitor Information Centre is located on Burwood Highway next door to the railway station.
