Signature Series: Dominique Portet Steak Frites and Creme Caramel

Ninth-generation winemaker Dominique Portet chose the cool climate of aptly named Coldstream in the Yarra Valley and has since created an incredible range of Australian wines crafted with a French sensibility.

Their onsite bistro overlooks rolling vineyards and showcases a classic French-inspired bistro menu. With head chef David Ball at the helm, their two and three-course set menus, as well as their L'Apéro menu (based on the French ritual of combining drinks, food and friends) and served on the outdoor terrace with a selection of à la carte seasonal small plates are two tasty experiences.

“Our bistro is like what you find in France,” says David. “Somewhere you can relax and feel at home - enjoy great food and wine with friends and family. So naturally, the inspiration behind our signature dishes comes from these places. You are always bound to find steak frites or creme caramel in these types of bistros all across France.”

David’s unique experiences go well beyond the Michelin-Starred establishments where he’s cooked. Born in Mansfield, UK, David started his career under the renowned Raymond Blanc' acclaimed two Michelin Star restaurant, Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, in Oxford. Now at Dominique Portet, his influence here stretches deep into the customer experience - with a natural reach into food systems, produce procurement, supply chains and sustainability.
