Watch artisans at work, sample generous tastings, and perhaps pick up a box (or three) of decadent treats to take home. Fair warning: you might not make it out of the car park before diving in.

Cheese

Cheese lovers, prepare to swoon. The rolling hills and cool climate create the perfect conditions for exceptional dairy, and local cheesemakers have truly mastered their craft. From creamy cheeses to sharp, crumbly cheddars and everything in between, you'll find cheeses that rival anything from Europe.

Iconic to the region, Yarra Valley Dairy is a must-stop location to find your favourites or discover a new one.

Bakeries

The bakeries scattered throughout the hills are another reason to loosen your belt a notch. Think sourdough with crackling crusts, buttery pastries that shatter at first bite, and pies that are basically edible hugs. Many use locally milled flours and seasonal produce, so every bite connects you to this generous landscape.

All the Extras

Don't overlook the preserves, honey, olive oils, and condiments tucked into farm gates and specialty shops. Local producers pour their hearts into small-batch jams, chutneys, and relishes that capture the essence of the region in a jar.

If you're visiting between May and August, keep your eyes peeled for truffles. This region has become Australia's truffle capital, with 'black gold' hidden beneath the soil.

Make a point to join a truffle hunt with Truffle Valley and their adorable truffle dogs, then savour the earthy luxury at local restaurants or purchase your own to take home.

If you can't join a hunt, buy some amazing fresh truffles, harvested just prior to your purchase at the rustic Truffle Shop. Their farmgate is open seasonally or by appointment.
