The Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail is one of Australia’s iconic Rail Trails which meanders through the Yarra Valley between the Dandenong Ranges and the Great Dividing Ranges. The 40km trail is perfect for walkers, cyclists, walking dogs and even horse riders! It follows the path of the historical railway line which was established in the 1900s to service the agricultural industry of the time.
Take the time to enjoy the spectacular views of the Yarra Ranges National Park, passing through beautiful bushland, wineries and farmlands.
Located only one hour from Melbourne by car or train, the 'Warby Trail' is a great place to visit on a day trip or why not stay overnight in a bed and breakfast. Stop in any of the townships along the way to experience the local produce and discover what the Yarra Valley is all about.
The track follows the old railway line through the towns of Wandin, Woori Yallock, Seville, Launching Place, Yarra Junction, Wesburn, Millgrove and finishes in Warburton.
Look out for kangaroos, bird life and spring wildflowers between Lilydale and Mount Evelyn, and butterflies and tree ferns on the way to Wandin. A great spot for a break is Launching Place Home Hotel, located along the trail at Launching Place. Stop off at the old railway station at Yarra Junction, now a pioneer museum, before taking in the magnificent views of the Central Highlands and Yarra Ranges National Park along the section to Wesburn. Take note of the Sam Knott Hotel, licensed in 1863 at Wesburn, before setting off on the final five-kilometre stretch to Warburton, a popular retreat and the end of the trail. Settle in at The Alpine Hotel Warburton for a well deserved meal or stay overnight and enjoy fantastic country hospitality and fantastic amenties.
