At the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, you'll find Avonsleigh, a rural locality first settled in the late 1800s by farmers and timber workers drawn to the area's fertile soil and abundant forests. The township takes its name from the Scottish heritage of early settlers, combining 'Avon' and 'leigh' (meaning meadow) to evoke the rolling pastoral landscapes they left behind.
In 1900, the construction of the narrow-gauge railway from Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook transformed Avonsleigh into an important stop along the line. The Avonsleigh Station became a gathering point for the local community and a vital link for transporting timber, produce and passengers through the ranges. After the railway's closure in the 1950s, it was restored and reopened in 1962 as the historic Puffing Billy Railway, with Avonsleigh Station remaining one of the scenic stops along the journey.
Today, Avonsleigh is part of the Shire of Cardinia and maintains its rural character with small farms, lifestyle properties and native bushland. The township is home to a close-knit community and is popular with those seeking a quiet country lifestyle while remaining within reach of Emerald, Cockatoo and Melbourne's outer suburbs.
Stop in for a bite at Bam Bam Italian, a family-friendly favourite for visitors and locals alike. Separated into two sections, it allows for diners with or without little ones to enjoy. And if you are travelling with small children, the back portion of the restaurant opens to an incredible playground that's kid-approved.
Here you'll also find walking trails, birdwatching opportunities and the chance to watch Puffing Billy steam through the surrounding hills.
The Eastern Dandenong Ranges Trail (or Emerald to Gembrook trail) is 15.5 kilometres long and passes through Emerald Lake Park and Wrights State Forest. A beautiful scenic path suitable for cycling, running and walking.
With its tranquil setting and friendly atmosphere, Avonsleigh offers a genuine escape to the country.
